Lee Pigage - Otter Creek Project

Pool Creek/Toobally Lakes/Otter Creek Bedrock Geology Project, southeast Yukon

In 1998 the Geological Survey of Canada, Calgary, initiated the Central Foreland NATMAP project for northeastern British Columbia, southeastern Yukon Territory, and southwestern Northwest Territories. The project was an initiative to promote multidisciplinary research in areas with poorly understood bedrock geology and high exploration potential for minerals and/or oil and gas. In 2000 the Yukon Geological Survey began geological mapping of NTS 95C/5 as part of the NATMAP program. YGS geologist Lee Pigage continued bedrock geology mapping in NTS 95D/8 (2003-2005) and NTS 95D/6 (2006-2007) after the NATMAP field work was completed.

Southeast Yukon has high exploration potential associated with the Kotaneelee gas field (gas) and Selwyn basin (minerals). It is coming under increasing scrutiny because of land-use planning questions.

During summer 2008 Lee will be staying in Whitehorse to finish preparing the bulletin and geoscience maps for NTS 95C/5 (Pool Creek) and NTS 95D/8 (Toobally Lakes). The bulletin will encompass geological work completed between the years 2000 and 2005 in southeast Yukon.
