The continuing Yukon Geological Survey’s Coast Belt project aims to answer first order geological questions about rocks found from the Aishihik Lake area, south to the British Columbia border. The multi-year bedrock mapping project focusses on the geologic relationship between Paleozoic and Mesozoic metamorphic rocks and variably aged plutonic and volcanic rocks. This data will be used to construct a better understanding of the tectonic evolution of southwest Yukon and ultimately the regional metallogenic significance of different geologic units.
Projects attached to this work include: graduate studies investigating the metamorphic history of the Yukon-Tanana terrane (Simon Fraser University), kinematic and timing investigations along the Denali fault (United States Geological Survey), regional metallogenic study focusing on Late Cretaceous intrusion related mineralization (Mineral Deposit Research Unit-UBC) and geologic bedrock mapping in the Nisling River area (Geological Survey of Canada).
