Google Earth Surficial Geology Data

Google Earth KMZ files were created from the interim digital surficial geology data and are currently available for download below. These files allow the user to three dimensionally visualize the surficial geology and satellite imagery of an area.

You will need to have an internet connection and Google Earth installed on your computer to view these files. Google Earth is available for free download here: http://www.google.com/earth/download/ge/agree.html

Once you have downloaded a KMZ file to your personal computer, open Google Earth, go to the “File” menu, select “Open…” and navigate to and select the downloaded KMZ file. The file may take a few minutes to load, depending on the size and speed of your internet connection.

When the KMZ file is loaded and displayed in Google Earth, you can pan and zoom to explore the point, line and polygon layers. Click on individual features to see associated information.

Map unit labels will be displayed when you click on individual polygons. While these labels may initially appear complex, they are simple to interpret using the following guide:
