The Central Foreland NATMAP Project was a multi-disciplinary collaborative mapping project to update the geological mapping of the Foothills of northeastern British Columbia and the Liard Basin region of the southern Northwest Territories and adjacent Yukon Territory. The Yukon Geology Program joined the Project during the 2000 field season and continued to participate in the program during the 2001 and 2002 field seasons. This study will better define the stratigraphy, structure, and mineral and hydrocarbon potential of the area.
Map sheet 95C/5 (Pool Creek - 135 km west-northwest of Fort Liard, Northwest Territories and 165 km east-northeast of Watson Lake, Yukon Territory) was the primary field area for Yukon Geology Program during the 2000 and 2001 field seasons. The final field season for the Central Foreland NATMAP Project was completed in 2002. Lee Pigage participated in the bedrock mapping, working largely in the western half of map sheet 95C.
Geological mapping continued in the North Toobally Lakes map sheet (95D/8) during the 2003-2005 field seasons. The Toobally geological mapping project was a small-scale program to further explore stratigraphy and structure delineated as part of the Central Foreland NATMAP Project. Limited exposure in the area means that it is most likely under explored for mineral economic potential.
Bedrock geology maps for the Yukon and Northwest Territories portions of the NATMAP project are currently being finalized for publication. The final maps and bulletin for the Yukon Geological Survey contribution to the project are in progress.
